First is a portrait of Dolfinette Martin, a formerly incarcerated mother of five children and a community organizer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dolfinette was the first in her family to be incarcerated. At age 45, she was also the first to graduate from college. Despite overwhelming bureaucratic and personal obstacles, Dolfinette graduated with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences in 2015. Now, she wants to help other women who have been in prison to accomplish their educational goals and find not just a job, but a career.

The Louisiana Prison Education Coalition is a group of people that are committed to increasing the educational opportunities for the 45,000 people currently in prison in Louisiana and all those directly impacted by the prison system. Through our collective power, we work to thoughtfully develop and implement programming to ensure that individuals can achieve their educational goals from early literacy through higher education. In addition to providing education in prison, we also seek to educate the public about prison in order build support for prison education and understanding for the impact of this system on our communities.
