Under the influence of experimental smokable medication, Rowen Amadeus Camor (Alice Voena) is a queer cult leader consumed by psychedelic visions. After forming the Church of Avalon through the guidance of Promise (John Cameron Mitchell), a hallucinated deity, Rowen faces a slow mental breakdown as they search for identity and meaning the day before a prophesied religious doomsday. The story unfolds with the lyricism and style of a glam concept album, through a series of poetic monologues set to the electronic soundscapes of Stephen Trask’s score. Shot on a variety of digital formats (including Hi-8), printed frame-by-frame on paper, and then animated with lipstick and liner, “Heaven Above Rowen” is a cinematic trip all its own.
